  • ASP.NET Web Forms and Bootstrap 3 Modals

    July 6, 2017 · 0 comments

There are a few methods for hiding and showing Bootstrap 3.x modals in an ASP.NET Web Forms application. This technique is pure ASP.NET (requires no client script) and allows you to show and hide modals by changing the Visible property of a containing PlaceHolder or Panel.

  • The command line interface is back

    April 28, 2017 · 0 comments

Back in the 1980s and early 1990s I considered myself a bit of an expert at the MS-DOS command line interface and knew all the commands and all of the options for each command.

  • In response to a request, I have made some improvements to the modified version of Mediademon's Simple jQuery Plugin To Create Pinterest Style Grid Layout - Pinterest Grid.

  • If you have an ASP.NET Web Forms page with multiple UpdatePanels and multiple UpdateProgress controls, sometimes you may want one or more UpdateProgress controls associated with a specific UpdatePanel, and one or more UpdateProgress controls that have no association with an UpdatePanel so are shown when any UpdatePanel is updated.

  • I still haven't given up on my belief that there is a place for a new programming language/environment where your application database logic are in a single system.

  • I recently needed to change a client’s website to send emails using Amazon SES and encountered a few issues.

  • Bootstrap 4 card with outline headers and footers

    December 22, 2016 · 0 comments

If you use Bootstrap 4 cards and apply one of the outline classes to add some colour you will find the header and footer are still grey, which doesn't look right.

What is WDIMPFS? A server with Windows, a DNS server, IIS, a Mail server, a control Panel of some sort, an FTP server and SQL Server.

  • Is ASP.NET better than PHP?

    September 21, 2016 · 0 comments

This posts stems from my own curiosity. It’s a question not a statement. I’ve been developing in ASP.NET for many years and I like it. I’ve dabbled a bit in PHP and there are some things I like and some I don’t like, but maybe I haven’t immersed myself in it enough to know what’s great about it…

  • Lately I've been looking at options for hosting various Classic ASP and ASP.NET websites that I am responsible for. Some are hosted on VPS and some are on shared hosting plans with various providers. I'm looking at Microsoft Azure Pack hosting from Gearhost, Everleap and Applied Innovations.

  • This post is not meant to be a review of Arvixe, it is to describe the unusual way that Arvixe configure their shared and VPS Windows servers.

  • I recently needed to show a video on a web page that needed to take the full width of the container (in this case, the full screen width) but keep a consistent height.

  • Although you can easily create inline checkboxes and radio buttons using ASP.NET CheckBoxes and RadioButtons using Bootstrap's checkbox-inline and radio-inline classes, it's not so easy with ASP.NET CheckBoxList and RadioButtonList controls.

  • Further refining the Web+DB concept

    June 17, 2016 · 0 comments

I’m not ready to give up on this concept.

  • Although probably no one cares about Classic ASP, except those who still need to support it, I was refreshing my memory today on how to use classes in Classic ASP and found a couple of options for simulating constructors with parameters.

  • I came across an issue where I was setting Page.Title in my ASPX page's Page_Load event, but it was appearing blank when I was attempting to retrieve the value in the MasterPage's Page_PreRender event.

  • I hope Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) fail

It's not often I wish such bad fortune on a new innovation but I am wishing Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) dies a quick death.

  • I know there are bugs in most (all?) of the websites I have developed, and I feel bad when I find a bug and wonder how long it's been there. But no matter how many bugs there are in your code, there's probably a worse website... Yahoo!

  • When I was looking for an alternative to Masonry to produce a responsive Pinterest style grid that was a lot simpler and lighter weight I came across this jQuery plugin on www.jqueryscript.net that is very simple and works well. However, It has a few issues which I needed to fix before I could use it.

Isn't it nice how search engines show a brief section of content with your search terms highlighted in search results?

  • Recently I've been researching and experimenting with alternate methods to various things involving development, particularly database access, and have come to the conclusion that the systems that we have evolved to today are not ideal.

  • Any website other than a very simple one uses a database these days, right? Well then why is there a separation between web server and database server? Surely there has to be an advantage in integrating these two systems into one?

  • I've been looking forward to the release of Bootstrap 4 and finally an Alpha version has been released.
